Controlling pallet integrity

In automated, high-throughput logistics environments, a single damaged pallet can bring an entire line to a standstill. The result: downtime, manual intervention, and rising costs, especially when the damage is only discovered halfway through the process. Motus Handling engineers tailor-made pallet inspection and recovery solutions that keep reliable pallets, and only reliable pallets, flowing through your operation.

  • Why pallet integrity matters

Damaged pallets are a silent cost driver. They cause unplanned line stoppages, reduce the reliability of automated systems, damage products and conveyors, create unsafe situations for operators, and drive up maintenance and labor costs.

The most effective strategy is prevention first, supported by smart recovery solutions for when damage does occur mid-process. Motus Handling covers both ends of that spectrum.

    Preventive: automatic pallet integrity checking

For operations where continuity and automation are essential, automatic pallet inspection offers the highest reliability. Motus Handling designs and builds custom pallet checking systems that integrate seamlessly into your logistics flow and inspect every pallet at high frequency, using proven mechanical and sensor-based principles:

    • Detection of broken or missing boards and cracked blocks
    • Detection of fork clearance
    • Detection of protruding nails, with a press roll that immediately pushes dangerous nails back down
    • Mechanical strength verification by pneumatically bending pallet elements and measuring deformation
    • Brush cleaning

A typical flow runs from pallet infeed and singulation, over optional cleaning, nail pressing and strength checking, to integrity inspection and a sorted outfeed: OK pallets continue, damaged pallets are routed to repair or rejection. The result is maximum reliability, consistent inspection quality and high throughput with minimal downtime

Preventive on a budget: the tipper line

When full automation is not required, a tipper line offers a simple and cost-effective preventive solution. Pallet stacks are tipped or rotated and presented to an operator for fast visual inspection, so visibly damaged pallets are removed early. Low complexity, low investment, immediate risk reduction.

Preventive: pallet sorting by color and type

Motus Handling can integrate camera-based pallet sorting by color for pallet pool separation, type differentiation and improved pallet logistics. A deliberate design choice: camera technology is used only for color and type recognition, never for integrity inspection, because mechanical verification is simply more reliable

    Corrective: handling damaged pallets mid-process

    Slave insertion units

When pallet damage is detected during operation, fast recovery without unloading is essential. Motus Handling offers two proven approaches: slave pallet insertion systems that instantly stabilize loads, and pallet inverters for safe pallet replacement under load, engineered from very simple to highly specific. Minimal downtime, improved safety, protected product integrity.
