Automatic supply chain at Volvo Car

Volvo Car Ghent is one of Europe’s leading automotive manufacturing sites.

The existing logistics system had reached its limits.

As volumes increased, the inbound and outbound flows could no longer deliver the required performance, creating a risk of delays in production.

Volvo needed a future-proof solution that would increase capacity while integrating seamlessly with its existing warehouse infrastructure

Together with an automation partner and in close cooperation with Volvo Car Ghent, Motus Handling developed and installed a fully automated supply chain system connecting the supply area, two warehouses, and the picking zone:

• Incoming pallets are automatically identified and routed to the correct destination using barcode scanning technology.
• Before entering the logistics flow, each pallet undergoes a quality inspection to ensure it meets the required standards.
• Non-compliant pallets are automatically removed from the process, while approved pallets are directed to one of the warehouses or directly to the picking area.
• A combination of vertical transfers and transport systems enables smooth product movement across multiple levels of the facility.
• A double transfer car ensures the right pallets arrive at the right location at the right time, keeping production supplied efficiently and reliably.
• A specially designed elevator combines vertical transport with a 90° horizontal pallet rotation, matching the product flow at different levels.
